Bedrooms Of Their Own

May 19, 2021

Owning a Habitat home means having space to live, grow, and gather, for Zonda Berry.

When she and her partner separated, she had to move her and her kids into a one-bedroom apartment, where she slept in the living room and her kids shared the bedroom. As her kids got older, she had to give them their own space, and ended up turning part of the kitchen into a bedroom for her son.

“It wasn’t the greatest setup, but we made things work,” she said.

Building her Habitat home was hard work; juggling being a single parent, working, and getting her 250 “sweat equity” hours in was a challenge, but it was worth it.

She and her kids were elated to have their own rooms and a place to call home. Watching her children play in a safe and stable environment is priceless.

“It was hard to believe I was officially a homeowner,” she said.
